Common Skin Conditions & Treatment Procedures

We can diagnose and treat the following skin conditions (and more) for you:

Acne

•Almost everyone has experienced an acne breakout at some point in their life. This extremely common skin condition takes on several different forms, and has many causes. Acne is caused by overactive sebaceous (oil) glands clogging up hair follicles. There are many reasons — from genetics to dietary choices — why someone may have overactive sebaceous glands, but hormones are the main cause. Stress can aggravate cases of acne, as can several impurities to which the skin is exposed.

A large pore that is clogged with oil becomes a blackhead, and a clogged pore with a small opening is a whitehead. There’s also cystic acne, which is more severe and can potentially lead to infection if left untreated.

Dermatology Procedures for Acne: There are many treatments for acne, but they fall into three main categories:

  • Topical Applications
  • Retinoids
  • Benzoyl Peroxide
  • Antibiotic Ointment
  • Salicylic Acid
  • Oral Medicines
  • Antibiotics
  • Birth Control
  • Isotretinoin (Accutane)
  • Procedures
  • Laser/Light Therapy
  • Chemical Peels
  • Drainage and Extraction

Topical applications typically don’t require any recovery time, and they are unlikely to leave any scarring because they work by killing bacteria and making skin less oily.

The same can be said for most orally-administered acne medications. The one exception is Isotretinoin, which has a reputation for both its effectiveness and the side effects it can cause (dry skin, chap lips, itchiness, etc.). Isotretinoin is often a last resort for individuals dealing with cystic acne.

Surgical procedures can result in scarring, and patients may require some downtime for recovery. Most people only resort to surgery when topical solutions and medications fail to produce the desired results.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin disease that is connected to the immune system and genetics. The condition causes red, scaly patches or bumps to appear on the outer layer of skin — typically the elbows, knees, and scalp, though any part of the skin can become affected by psoriasis. Outbreaks are usually triggered by factors such as stress, injuries to the skin, and certain medications.
